The Summer course Multilingual and Intercultural Communication Competence (MICC) for International Projects (3 ECTS) is a course engaging students in an international project and the course offers tools for analyzing and enhancing intercultural communication competence in different contexts and situations. The course is suitable for all study fields and study levels.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the students are expected to:
- Distinguish and analyze different theoretical approaches to intercultural communication
- Understand, reflect, and discuss fundamental issues in multilingual communication and intercultural communication competence [evaluate/assess]
- Participate effectively and appropriately in multilingual and multicultural environments, both during physical encounters and with online teams. [professional/practical skills, apply]

- Acquiring Intercultural communication competence both in online as well as physical environments and contexts
- Understanding the complexity of virtual collaboration and its impact on teams and individuals
- Different approaches to interculturality (functional, interpretative, critical)

- Improving multilingual and intercultural communication competence (MICC) in a global context
Description of the course
Students will be engaging in an international project and the course offers tools for analyzing and enhancing intercultural communication competence in different contexts and situations.
The course aims at
- Building understanding of the different approaches to multilingual and intercultural communication competence needed in modern global work life
- Providing a learning environment that allows for experiencing the benefits and challenges of multicultural teamwork (virtual and f2f)
- Enabling students to be self-aware and valuable contributors in virtual and f2f collaboration
Additional information
The course consists of two online classes (19.5 and 26.5) and lectures/discussions
taking place prior to the contact teaching (02.6 – 06.6). In addition to this, methods of learning include selected readings, group work, and individual assignments.

Students must participate in all the online meetings and the live contact teaching week in Dijon. During the week in Dijon, the social programme ensures that you will get the most out of your experience by getting to know Dijon and France and by creating unforgettable memories with your fellow students.
The course and the social programme are free of charge for the participating students. Students must pay for their travel expenses, accommodation and meals, etc. Students from Europe should check with their home universities for possible Erasmus BIP-funding and /or BIP-status.

Students from Johannes Kepler University (JKU, Linz, Austria) can participate in this BIP, if they are enrolled in “Virtual Collaboration in a Global Context” (247.035) course starting on 5th of March. They will be enrolled directly by their professors.
“Multilingual and Intercultural Communication Competence (MICC) for International Projects” BIP is an embedded section of the “Virtual Collaboration in a Global Context” course. Part of the course will be taught only in Linz (the first six sessions including simulations) and there will be a teamwork and connected assignments only for students from JKU (Linz, Austria). Starting from 19th of May online session, JKU students are expected to participate in the course in the same way as students from the other partner universities, including virtual collaboration teamwork with international students.
All students are expected to participate in person in the sessions in Dijon (France) between Monday, June 2 and Friday, June 6, 2025.

How to get to Dijon
The city of Dijon is located in Burgundy, some 320 km South-East of Paris. The connections are relatively frequent and the journey from Paris to Dijon takes 1h30 hours by train with SNCF. It’s also possible to come to Dijon from Lyon, by train it takes around 2 hours.
Train tickets can be quite expensive, so you also have the possibility of taking a bus (with the company Flixbus), which takes longer but is a cheaper option.
